HJF Code of Conduct

When Christy & David created Hero's Journey Fitness, they did their best to design a safe place where we could all work together toward  our individual fitness goals. This is a challenging thing we all do at the gym together in every class; it can sometimes leave us emotionally raw. Especially when we enter the gym with taut nervous systems, we can end up a bundle of exposed nerves. At the same time, we are friends going through it together and we tease and cajole each other like friends. Sometimes, those two realities rub against each other in uncomfortable ways, and little fires start.

It's up to all of us to try to anticipate those fires if we can, and head them off or put them out. Coaches aren't always going to be in the best position to see or intervene. Even when Christy or David are there, we sometimes cannot see or hear what's happening until it is over, and can't understand the fullness of what occurred until days later. Sometimes friction is going to happen. Christy & David do their best to maintain this as a safe space, as do our coaches. In light of this, there are a few things we'd like everyone to consider, then a couple of rules it appears we need to make clear and concrete.

First, our responsibilities to ourselves and each other:

If we feel emotionally raw or vulnerable in a way that that makes class interaction feel uncomfortable, we can remove ourselves from risk in a handful of ways:

  • We can wear headphones and retreat into our music

  • We can remove ourselves to the less-crowded edges of the gym

  • We can let a coach know that we’re not in the mood to interact, so they can look out for us

  • If we find ourselves in a situation that feels like unwelcome teasing or even bullying directed at us, we ask the teaser to “please stop.”

When we’re interacting with our friends, we can make certain:

  • If someone is working out with headphones or earbuds, assume they are doing so to be left alone

  • If someone is hanging away from the group, you may invite them to join, but do not press if they decline

  • If someone wishes to discuss topics that might be inflammatory even inside our progressive space, we will all be mindful that not all will agree; if it cannot wait til after class, speak and listen with kindness

  • If someone asks you to “please stop” teasing them, stop - nothing else directed at them or about them

Second: the following will not be tolerated:

If we hear of something along the lines of these happening, we will do our best to investigate all sides. Depending upon the outcome, a warning may be issued, or membership revoked. If a warning is issued, a second occurrence will result in membership revocation. No one wants to do this, but in order to keep our space safe, we must.

  • Violence, or threats of violence

  • Hate speech of any kind

If any of these things happen, please let us or a coach know. If you tell a coach, they will get it to us.

Thank you.
